When I hear people claim that yoga is not for them, I sit back and wonder why would anyone think that? There are a lot of misconceptions about yoga but let’s start with some scientific information.

Quantum physics accepts that the universe, including you and me,  is made up of energy and not matter. Quantum physics proves that solid matter does not exist because atoms are not solid. Without getting too deep into quantum physics, as this area has a vast and infinite array of information, we are all energy.

“If quantum mechanics hasn’t profoundly shocked you, you haven’t understood it yet. Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real.”
– Niels Bohr

Whether you engage in Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Yoga or any other movement involving energy, you are exposed to another way of life. Many people might not believe or understand the concept of energy and it may be overwhelming, but accepting and knowing this to be true is the first step.

A Yoga practice is meant for you to focus inwards and bring awareness into your body. During the short, guided meditation sessions I lead, I like to remind people that energy goes where your attention goes. Yoga is a great practice to focus your attention and therefore move your energy inwards. By bringing the breath together with the postures you may go deep within. This method is a way to practice mindfulness, which is a skill one needs to practice constantly in order to become better at it.

By sitting in awareness and pure consciousness, one can better understand the mind and the beliefs you have created over the years. Seeing the thoughts and programming you have played over and over again in your mind can help you understand what has created your life. This programming and unconscious focus has placed energy into that which you think and believe. By practicing yoga, you are strengthening the mind-body connection and the energy within.

If this still seems very hokey to you, then take a challenge. Sit down in a quiet space and allow yourself to be fully in the present moment, without thinking, without itching, and just be.

How long can you do that for? Do you notice that within the first 30 seconds or a minute, your mind has already drifted away? Thoughts come in and you forget that you are thinking because you identify with each thought. Minutes can turn into hours, and you forget that you have been daydreaming and not living. When our minds are in the past, thinking about what was or what can be, we are not living in the present moment.

“Most humans are never fully present in the now, because unconsciously they believe that the next moment must be more important than this one. But then you miss your whole life, which is never not now. And that’s a revelation for some people: to realize that your life is only ever now.” Eckhart Tolle

Yoga is a gateway into the present moment. A practice of mindfulness and connection to your higher being and energy.

Yoga Asana classes are also a great way to loosen and stretch the physical body. Everyone has stiffness and discomforts as the years go on, and some may even have injuries and chronic pain. Physical yoga is a wonderful way to keep your joints healthy and mobile. There is never a disadvantage to stretching.

There are some people who find it boring, claiming that the mind is not given enough stimuli. But that is the point. To quiet the mind and focus on ease. The first few classes might be hard, but with practice, as your muscles build strength, it becomes easier. The benefits of coming out of your head and into your body are endless. You feel your whole life shift and your electrical frequency heightens.

If you have silly thoughts such as “well yoga is only for women,” then you need to know to understand that such thoughts only limit your life. Both men and women participate in yoga to reap the benefits and they have been for many years.

“Yoga is not about touching your toes. It is what you learn on the way down.” – Jigar Gor

Yoga can be for everyone because it is a method to help detach from stress, worry and the chaotic world we sometimes live in, while also helping our bodies become more mobile and flexible.
